What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures, also known as overdentures, are anchored to the jawbone using dental implants. A dental implant is a small titanium post surgically inserted into the jawbone to serve as the foundation for the final denture itself. Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, an abutment is placed on top of the implant. The abutment attaches the denture to the implant, providing a secure and stable fit.
There are two types:
- Bar-retained
- Ball-retained
In a bar-retained implant-supported denture, a thin metal bar attaches to the implant abutments, and the denture snaps onto the bar. In a ball-retained implant-supported denture, each abutment has a ball-shaped connector, and the denture has a corresponding socket that snaps onto the ball.
Supported dentures replace missing teeth, up to an entire arch, either in the upper or lower jaw. They’re typically recommended for people who have lost all or most of their natural teeth and have adequate jawbone density to support the implant. Unlike traditional dentures, which are secured to the gums using adhesives, implant-supported dentures don’t rely on the gums for support.

The Implant-Supported Dentures Process
Since dental implants support these dentures, patients will undergo oral surgery. The entire process can take anywhere between three and nine months to complete. Patients will experience the following:
- Initial Appointment: During your first appointment, the dentist will evaluate your oral health, discuss your dental history, take X-rays and impressions, and possibly order a CT scan to assess bone density and locate nerves and sinus cavities. This helps determine if implant-supported dentures are the best solution for you. Temporary dentures may be created during this phase.
- First Procedure: Our dentist will make a small incision in your gums, drill a hole in the exposed jawbone, and place the implant posts. Each implant is placed with precision, and the incisions are closed with sutures. This procedure is repeated for each implant needed. Afterward, you will begin the healing process at home.
- Healing: Over the next three to six months, a process called osseointegration occurs, where the implant posts naturally fuse with the jawbone, creating a stable foundation for the dentures.
- Second Procedure: Once the implants have fused with the bone, a second procedure is performed to expose the tops of the implants. The dentist places healing caps or collars on each implant to guide the healing of the surrounding tissue. These are worn for about 10 to 14 days. The dentist then replaces the healing caps with regular abutments and takes another impression to create the artificial teeth and denture framework.
- Placing Your Dentures: In the final procedure, the dentist attaches a metal bar, or ball attachment, to the abutments and tries on the artificial teeth and denture framework to ensure a proper fit. Once everything fits correctly, the new teeth are permanently secured, providing a stable and beautiful smile.
